Sadness V/S Depression
Being sad about a life event, upset over a fight or being discouraged by a failure happens to everyone. It is a natural feeling that comes and fades away after a while. You do not necessarily forget what made you sad, but you do move on. Depression on the other hand is different. If you feel sad and gloomy all the time and a feeling of hopelessness haunts you, then this is not simply sadness.
This means losing interest in activities that you previously found enjoyable. Now, this is one of the strongest signals that something is not right with your psychological health. So, if you loved cooking and all of a sudden you do not find any interest in entering the kitchen either, then it is time to take a step back and analyze what’s going on with you.
If you are restless most of the times without any particular reason, then this may be a sign of depression. People suffering from depression also become highly irritable and are set off by the smallest of triggers. If you have observed that behavior developing inside you, then it is time that you seek professional help.
Depression does not always lead to suicidal thoughts. However, what is a common symptom is the loss of interest in living. People no longer see any purpose, need or value in their existence. They might not necessarily want to kill themselves, but they want to stop existing altogether. This loss of self-worth is one of the worst effects of depression. Also, people experience either complete loss of appetite or go the other way into overeating, even though they have maintained a normal diet in the past.
Feeling Actual Pain
Since depression is a psychological problem, some of its symptoms manifest in the way we think, and act. Although the condition does not pose any major physical manifestations, patients of depression find themselves suffering from regular headaches, aches, and digestive problems among other things. Like depression, these aches are persistent. General physical problems usually go away with medication. However, those occurring due to depression do not go away after taking medication as well. This makes the condition of the patient much worse.
